I focused on a different part of history than most people, but this topic was a lot of fun to research. I first chose women in comedy because I want to be a comedian. However, it became very personal to me; as I looked more into Moms early life, I saw more of myself. I know it isn't easy to overcome trauma and that made me respect her so much more. Moms Mabley became my inspiration through this project.
I first saw a documentary on Moms Mabley directed by Whoopi Goldberg. It got me so interested in the life that was Loretta Mary Aiken. I couldn't really find any books on Moms, but I did find quite a few articles. It was kind of difficult to find information on her personal life since she didn't put everything out there.
I decided to do a website so everyone can have access to my project. I am so passionate about this project and I want everyone to know about this amazing woman. A website is also very convenient; I won't need to carry around a board or props. Additionally, websites can be so different and it can be changed up to fit the theme of the information it holds.
Moms Mabley fits the Rights and Responsibilities theme in so many ways. She had an entertaining way of fighting for the equality of women, African Americans, and homosexuals. She fought for the rights of so many people and informed her audiences of other people who defended people. She did that by singing a song that included Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther, and John F Kennedy. I feel like she was the perfect fit for this theme.
