Moms was different than other comedians. She risked her career by bringing in serious topics to her acts. She didn't really seem like a performer; she was someone everybody could relate to. From her house dress and floppy hat to her missing teeth, she was real. She was everyone's "mom". Moms publicly highlighted the struggles of both African Americans and women. She used her comedy as a form of social protest by commenting on issues like racism, political criticisms, gender, and female sexuality. She mainly spoke against racial and gender inequality. Based on her upbeat stage presence, no one would ever imagine the sad story behind her toothless grin. She used her difficult past to push herself to make others laugh even when she can't. She was a different type of comedian. She didn't tell jokes; she told stories. She wanted her audience to use her stories to make the difference in the world she didn't realize she was already making.
